Hexion Wins Prestigious
2008 R&D 100 Award
Hexion Specialty Chemicals, Inc. has been named a recipient of a prestigious R&D 100 Awards for 2008, which recognize the 100 most significant proven technological advances of the year, according to R&D Magazine.
These awards have been called the “Oscars of Invention.” For more than 45 years, the R&D Awards have provided “…a mark of excellence known to industry, government, and academia as proof that the product is one of the most innovative ideas of the year,” R&D Magazine stated.
The award recognizes Hexion for its leadership in the development of commercially viable technology for a bio-based powder coating in conjunction with Battelle and the Ohio Soybean Council. Hexion’s bio-based powder coating technology delivers a durable and cost-effective solution that is based on renewable resource feedstocks, such as soybeans and corn. The bio-based powder coating technology also enables low-temperature curing, which leads to lower overall energy costs, although it can also be used on high-temperature substrates, such as metals. As a Battelle licensee, Hexion is focused on commercializing the technology.
“There is great interest in the replacement of some petrochemical feedstocks with bio-based feedstocks for use in a wide range of applications,” said Rich Myers, executive vice president and chief technology officer, Hexion. “The R&D 100 Award recognizes our ongoing commitment to innovation and Hexion is pleased to be part of such a respected group of industry leaders.”
The global awards are selected annually by an independent panel of judges and the editors of R&D Magazine. The R&D 100 Award winners will be recognized at a formal ceremony in Chicago in October 2008.
